Hye Park's Main Event Story
It's difficult to say whether or not the poker games played among Second Battalion Eighth Marines were easier or tougher than the tournaments played at the World Series of Poker (WSOP). What is easier to say, is that it must have proved great preparation for former Marine Hye Park who served from 2001-2005.
Now a professional poker player, this is his second cash in the WSOP Main Event after finishing 535th in 2018 for $26,535. Now three years later, he's navigated his way to the WSOP Main Event final table and locked up a cool $1,000,000.
The New Jersey resident has 21 cashes at the WSOP and further five on the WSOP Circuit. His efforts under the WSOP umbrella has resulted in $239,553 in earnings and one WSOP Circuit ring, which came in July in the WSOP Summer Circuit Event #8 - $50,000 GTD NLH Deep Turbo 2x Re-entry for $14,398.

Hye Park Key Hands
Park ended Day 6 with the chip lead after back-to-back eliminations saw him move above 15 million in chips. He held ace-king in two separate hands against Jon Shoreman and Gabriel Sack, besting the ace-nine and ace-five of his opponents respectively.
By the end of the day, that 15 million had almost doubled as he lead the survivors into Day 7. An early double from Jack Oliver reined him in, and after the three table seat draw he was seated with Koray Aldemir, tussling with the aggressive German on numerous occasions.
How Hye Park Got to the Final Table
Day | Chips | Rank |
---|---|---|
Day 1a | 117,800 | 93/348 |
Day 2abd | 226,900 | 343/1,440 |
Day 3 | 538,000 | 260/1,000 |
Day 4 | 1,150,000 | 143/292 |
Day 5 | 5,495,000 | 27/96 |
Day 6 | 29,500,000 | 1/36 |
Day 7 | 13,500,000 | 7/9 |
What to Watch For
With 17 big blinds and pay jumps still to play their part, Park will be aware of both Chase Bianchi and Jareth East chipping up or even doubling behind him. There is almost a ten million gap to Ozgur Secilmis who is sixth in chips, so you would expect some serious work would need doing for him to close in on the Turkish player.
However, there are several players above him who would not want to have a 13.5 million dent in their stack, so Park could look to ramp up the aggression and force out the two stacks that are shorter than him.
